Phonological Awareness Activities for Preschoolers

Preschoolers begin to demostrate their phonological skills by identifing words with a similar beginning sound and indicating when two words rhyme or do not rhyme. Advanced preschoolers may also be able to identify words with a similar ending sound or suggest a series of rhyming words when given a base word.

Experience Preschool provides 20 daily lessons each month. Within those lessons there are seven domains of development. See the full continuum of skills the Experience Preschool Curriculum addresses.

Read about how Experience Curriculum incoporates phonological awareness skills through games, music, stories and movement across our curriculum programs.

Examples of Phonological Awareness Activies in Experience Preschool

Phonological awareness is demonstrated by preschoolers in the following ways:

LLD 3 PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS
Benchmark 3: Shows awareness of separate words in spoken language. Suggests a missing rhyming word within a poem or song.
Benchmark 4: Identifies words that have a similar beginning sound. Identifies when two words rhyme. Shows awareness of separate syllables in a word.

Below are some examples of activities that encourage phonological awareness for preschoolers:

Letter & Word Games

Place letter and word cube cards
in the hat and invite a child to pull
out one card. If it is a letter H or a
word that begins with the /h/ sound,
invite children to color on the paper
until you say stop.

Preschoolers pull a letter or word card out of a hat. If it is a letter H or a word that begins with the /h/ sound, invite children to color on the paper until you say stop. Children can try to write the letter H.

I Can Read Books

Each month preschoolers explore I Can Read books which feature sight words. As children point to each word while the educator reads, they show awareness of separate words.

They can begin to recognize and Identify words that have a similar beginning sound. Preschoolers anticipate words in a familiar text.

Hands-On Letters & Word Puzzles

Children explore building words with Hands-On Letters and Word Puzzle Mats.

Preschoolers practice phonological awareness by identifying beginning word sounds and creating words with similar sounds.

These are just a few examples of Literacy & Langauge and Phonological Awareness activities included in the Experience Preschool curriculum.
