The Bird Tracks Sensory STEAM Station promotes Investigation & Inquiry and fine motor skill development. Children explore making bird tracks in playdough with a variety of tools.

Bird Tracks Sensory STEAM Station
Collect some simple supplies, including playdough, sticks, pencils and other items to press into playdough. Invite children to explore making prints in the dough using the various materials. Make bird tracks or other animal tracks. Start the inquiry by asking “Where might you see bird tracks?” Look at the different kinds of feet birds have. Which birds have big tracks? Small tracks?

What happens when you push an object into playdough? If children are not sure what to do at first, demonstrate and ask questions. Look at and point to the pictures. However the children use the tools is okay even if it doesn’t look like bird tracks.

Use whatever tools you have for the Bird Tracks Sensory STEAM Station that you think children may enjoy using – for this example we used a paintbrush, pencil, sticks and golf tees. Be creative! Nature items are always a good choice.
